"The purpose of this study was to examine how a growth mindset affects a teacher's professional learning and growth. In addition, this study examined how a growth mindset might help foster teacher agency around change and reform in the classroom. Finally, the study explored the relationship between a growth mindset and a teacher's feelings of efficacy. The participants consisted of 10 teachers, identified as growth-minded by district instructional coaches and corroborated by a high score on the Dweck Mindset Inventory. The teachers came from six different schools in a small K-8 suburban district. The teachers were interviewed to ascertain the role a growth mindset played in their professional growth. What emerged in the analysis of the interviews of these growth-minded teachers were common beliefs in embracing change, being reflective practitioners, seeking opportunities to grow, being collaborative, and having student-centered classrooms. These teachers also exhibited high levels of efficacy and willingness for risk-taking in their classrooms. A growth mindset has allowed these teachers to see change as a means to remain focused on students' needs and a vehicle for professional growth. An important implication of this study is that a growth mindset, a construct that can be taught, might positively impact teachers in their professional growth, as well as allow for change agentry. This study adds to the existing research on the benefits of a growth mindset and provides some evidence that developing teachers with growth mindsets could enhance school reform"--Abstract, p. 1.
